IRP
and sustainable
development
IRP believes that energy is a critical component
for sustainable human development. Yet to achieve sustainability,
three main components must be considered: economy,
environment, and social.

Worldwide, an estimated 2 billion
people continue to lack access to modern energy
services. Though we know that energy is absolutely
essential for development, little international attention has been
devoted to this important relation.
IRP is firmly convinced that
energy is not a sectoral issue, but intrinsically
related to numerous dimensions of development. Energy's critical
linkages to poverty and development include gender disparity, population
growth, and food security. Its connection to the environment includes
health impacts, acidification, and climate change and land degradation.
A more tangible linkage to the economy includes investment, foreign
exchange and trade impacts. And its ties to security concerns entail
national access to energy supplies and nuclear proliferation.
