IRP - 2001 RE seminar

In February of 2001, IRP organized a two-day international seminar entitled "The Role of Renewable Energies in Providing Clean Rural Energy". The event, held in Lima, Perú, brought experts on Renewable Energies (RE) from abroad and Perú, and served to discuss the potential of RE on developing energy programs in rural areas of Latin America. The seminar focused on the following topics:

  • Impact of the Kyoto Protocol and the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) in Perú
  • National policies on the use of RE in rural areas
  • Sustainability of RE systems
  • Financing RE systems
  • Rural electrification projects in the Amazon region

Objectives of the seminar included:

  • To provide perspectives on the use of RE in the rural areas of Perú
  • To provide information on the opportunities to use the CDM in Perú; and
  • To provide information on the RE projects in the Peruvian Amazon region.

The topics and objectives of the seminar were jointly coordinated among the Dirección Ejecutiva de Proyectos (DEP) of the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) of Perú and Fondo Nacional del Ambiente (FONAM), representing the Peruvian government sector, and by IRP. IRPorganized the seminar with official sponsorships of the Peruvian Government through DEP/MEM and FONAM.

According to Mr. Marcos Alegre, General Manager of IRP, "renewable energy systems provide a unique capability to provide rural electricity, while at the same time, helping to reduce global warming." IRP is currently executing pilot projects in two villages of Amazon region, Padre Cocha and Indiana, which, through the use of existing diesel generators, photovoltaic modules, and battery storage, will provide 24-hour electricity to villages now solely dependent on diesel generators for limited electricity.

Electronic copies of the presentations can be viewed from the Agenda.
