Lima, Peru
- ILZRO Raps Peru (IRP), Instituto National de Desarollo (INADE)
and the Agency Peruana de Cooperación International (APCI)
are jointly sponsoring a seminar entitled “Analysis and Perspectives
of RAPS Systems as clean energy technology for rural electrification
in Peru.” The seminar is planned for January 27, 2004 at the
Swissotel in Lima, Perú.
The objective of the seminar
is to discuss the recently completed installation of a novel remote
area power supply (RAPS) system in the Peruvian village of Padre
Cocha in the Region of Loreto, in the Amazon jungle. A further goal
is to identify additional partners and resources for replication
of these novel RAPS installations in other villages in the region.
Remote Area Power Supply (RAPS)
technology targets small communities with limited electricity service
and uses available diesel generators along with solar photovoltaic
(PV) arrays and advanced energy storage batteries. The results are
benefits that substantially increase service quality, provide 24-hour
electricity, and expand opportunities for productive, economic,
and educational activities in the communities.
Project
Background
The RAPS project in Perú seeks to contribute to the economic,
social and environmental development of rural areas by providing
electricity and the potential to develop income generation activities
with the available energy for the inhabitants of these remote communities.
To this end, ILZRO RAPS PERU
(IRP) - a non-profit organization, based in the city of Iquitos,
Perú - was founded in 1999 to lead the implementation of
the RAPS systems project in rural communities of Loreto in the Amazon
Basin of Perú. IRP coordinates activities with international
organizations as well as national and regional entities in Perú,
including the Ministry of Energy and Mines and the Regional Government
of Loreto. IRP is backed by the International Lead Zinc Research
Organization, Inc. (ILZRO), a non-profit research association based
in North Carolina, USA and Doe Run Peru, a major producer of metals,
based in Lima.
Recently, a pilot RAPS system
has been completed in the village of Padre Cocha. The system has
been providing 24-hour electricity to the community continuously
for nearly 3 months.
The majority of funding for
the initial two RAPS systems was provided by ILZRO, the Global Environmental
Facility (GEF), the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC), the US Department
of Energy, and the Regional Government of Loreto (GOREL).
